Ovarian Cancer

The ovaries are one of the essential reproductive organs of female reproductive system that yields eggs. Ovarian cancer is a cancerous growth that begins from ovaries. This is of the most typical female disease. The most dangerous type of cancer for female since it leads to more death as opposed to other reproductive types of cancer.

It is found out that most of the ovarian cancers develop from the surface of ovary and in some cases it also discovered that it arises from the surface of fallopian tube. As the tubes and ovaries are very close together so this is also considered ovarian cancer. Again this cancer could arise from the egg cells.

Causes and Risks of ovarian cancer
What is the real reason for ovarian cancer is mysterious. However the risk of ovarian cancer is lower for the woman having more children and also the woman who carries baby earlier in life. Once again some genetic imperfections are also the cause of ovarian cancer. However, the woman going through breast cancer in her own household or personal history of cancer of the breast is more vulnerable to ovarian cancer. The woman who is taking estrogen over five year is extremely susceptible to ovarian cancer. It is discovered over the study that birth control pills and fertility drugs reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. Again the use of combined oral contraceptive pill is also a protective factor to ovarian cancer. Women are much safe from being affected by ovarian cancer when they have fallopian tube blocked surgically. The women of senior years are remarkably vulnerable to ovarian cancer.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer

The signs of ovarian cancer are difficult to ascertain by the sufferer as the symptoms don’t emerge with obvious sign. So the existence of ovarian cancer will not show any extreme symptoms where one can think that she has to consult with her doctor. At the time when cancer is diagnosed the tumor by now spreads beyond the ovary. So one has to be more conscious of the primary signs which are often overlooked by the individuals and results in critical attack of cancer. The signs which are observed often in case of ovarian cancer are listed here-

1. Difficulty in eating, for which a patient cannot eat comfortably.

2. Ovarian cancer is among the causes of abnormal menstrual cycle.

3. Unexpected pain that occurs in numerous parts of body like back pain, abdominal pain, pelvic pain etc.

4. Irregular bleeding in vagina and urinary blockage.

5. Uncontrolled loss of weight.

6. Various digestive problems like gastric, vomiting tendency, lack of digestion etc.

Treatment

Physical is usually used for the treatment of ovarian cancer. The surgical treatments involves the blockage of fallopian tubes, elimination of uterus physically, removing of several tissues and lymph nodes exist in abdomen and pelvis. After the surgery chemotherapy is given to eliminate the cancer cells. This is also used if the cancer returns to the patient after surgery. Radiation therapy is another way of treatment which is used much rarely.

What Are The Symptoms Of An Underactive Thyroid Gland?

An underactive thyroid is also known as hypothyroidism and this means there is a reduced amount of thyroid hormone circulating in the body. Thyroid hormones regulate body metabolism. Lower than normal amounts of thyroid hormone in the body means metabolism will become sluggish.

An underactive thyroid is most common in women and the risk increases with age. Simple treatments are usually quite effective but they can be lifelong.

Primary hypothyroidism is caused by an inadequate production of thyroid hormones. This can be caused by an inflammation of the thyroid. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is a common type of inflammation that tends to run in families and sometimes occurs postpartum or after a bacterial or viral illness.

Another cause of primary hypothyroidism is due to a birth defect which results in a child being born without a thyroid gland or with a non functioning gland. This condition can cause severe physical and mental disabilities if it is not diagnosed and treated early.

Acquired hypothyroidism can occur after surgery due to thyroid cancer or to correct hyperthyroidism. Some drugs can also affect the thyroid and cause hypothyroidism. These include amiodarone which is used for palpitations, lithium which is used to treat bipolar disease, and radioactive iodine which is used to treat hyperthyroidism.

Iodine deficiency can also contribute to acquired hypothyroidism because iodine is required to produce thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency is rare in Western countries since iodine is commonly added to table salt.

Secondary hypothyroidism occurs when the pituitary gland does not create enough Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) to trigger the manufacture of thyroid hormone in the thyroid.

Symptoms in the early stages of hypothyroidism may be nonexistent or attributed to another cause. As the underactive thyroid gland becomes more severe, the symptoms become more severe as it becomes obvious the body’s metabolism has slowed. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, constipation, slow reflexes, unable to tolerate cold, slow heart rate, poor memory, poor appetite, weight gain, dry or thickened skin, hoarse voice and muscle spasms.

An underactive thyroid is easily diagnosed with a blood test. A patient is found to have hypothyroidism if the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood is lower than normal. Treatment for the condition is both simple and effective. The thyroid hormone levels are brought back to normal by taking thyroid hormone replacement pills on a daily basis.

Therapy begis with a small dose which is gradually raised until the hormone levels are within a normal range. Once the optimum dosage is determined, the patient will probably remain on the same dose for life unless yearly blood tests determine the dosage needs to be adjusted.

Thyroid hormone replacement medication, or Thyroxine, should be taken first thing in the morning at least a half an hour before eating breakfast. Foods high in fiber and bran as well as iron supplements and antacids can interfere with the absorption of Thyroxine and should not be taken close together.

Side effects of Thyroxine are rare and are usually the result of not taking the proper amount of medication. Too much will cause side effects consistent with symptoms of hyperthyroidism and not enough will cause side effects consistent with hypothyroidism. Most people with an underactive thyroid gland lead normal healthy lives as long as they receive effective treatment.

Sexual Performance Problems and Medication – Tips for Restoring Function

Prescription medications are often necessary for treating serious or chronic conditions, and they can be critical to a man’s overall health. However, many medications come with a host of unwanted side effects. For men, impaired sexual performance can be an especially upsetting problem, as medications can interfere with hormone production, circulation and nerve function, leading to a reduction in sexual desire and/or the ability to become aroused. While it is important to follow a treatment plan for a serious health problem, impaired sexual performance can create problems of its own, affecting a man’s overall quality of life. Fortunately, by working with their doctors, as well as engaging in adequate penis care, men are often able to improve their responsiveness and ability to perform.

The following types of medications are often prescribed for dealing with common health problems and are known to cause problems with sexual performance in men (as well as women, in many cases):

1. Medications for hypertension (high blood pressure);
2. Antidepressants and antianxiety medications;
3. Anti-seizure medications used for treating epilepsy;
4. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (these may include over-the-counter medications for treating everyday aches and pains);
5. Medications used in treating Parkinson’s disease;
6. Antiarrhythmic heart medications;
7. Antihistamines (over-the-counter remedies for colds and allergies may be included in this category);
8. Muscle relaxants;
9. Prostate cancer medications;
10. Chemotherapy medications.

In addition to doctor-prescribed medications, there are numerous recreational and illicit substances that can have unwanted sexual side effects; even alcohol can have a negative impact in terms of sexual performance.

Tips for handling medication-induced loss of sexual function

Loss of sexual function can be enormously frustrating; however, it is critically important that men do NOT stop taking any medications without consulting with their physicians first. Stopping a prescribed treatment may lead to dangerous health complications. Other solutions may be available to address sexual performance problems:

1. Alternative medications. Often, when loss of performance is of concern, there are alternative medications that may address the same health issue without the negative effects on a man’s sexual response. Men should work with their doctors to find the medication that works best for their condition.

2. Dietary changes. Whether loss of function is linked to medications or to the underlying medical condition, changes to the diet can help to improve a man’s overall physiological health, not to mention his ability to perform. Eating fresh, unprocessed foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, heart-healthy fats, lean protein and fiber can increase energy levels, improve a man’s mood and promote healthy heart function – all of which are important to a healthy libido.

3. Exercise. Enough can’t be said about the importance of physical activity. Regular exercise is a crucial part of staying healthy, and this includes not only a man’s physical condition, but his mental health as well. Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, can have enormous benefits, including weight loss, increased cardiovascular function and feelings of well-being and confidence.

4. Medications. While not all men are enthusiastic about adding a medication to counter the effects of another medication, some may choose to explore this option. In some cases, doctors may suggest another prescription medication to counter issues with impotence.

5. Penis health creams. For some men, adding a specially-formulated penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) to their personal care routine may be an effective option. A crème that is enriched with vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants that are aimed at improving circulatory and nerve function in the penis may lead to increased function by stimulating blood flow and sensation in the area where it matters most. And even men who do not have performance-related issues can benefit from a cream that leaves the penile skin soft, smooth and resilient.

What Are the Two Best Fruits/Vegetables?

We’re all about the best of the best, the super fruit, the ultimate discovery that will revolutionize the food industry, our health, our lives. We don’t want to muck around with common fruit and vegetables, we want the ne plus ultra, we want the maximum bang for our buck, and if it’s not loaded with anti-oxidants, probiotics, vitamins, minerals, and any other number of names that we don’t understand but appreciate eating, we tend to roll our eyes and ignore it. Hence the constant race to uncover the latest miracle fruit from the Amazon basin, the rush to develop the ultimate genetically engineered monster vegetable. So, given our obsession, which amongst the known fruits and vegetables really is the best?

It’s a hard call, and any decision will ultimately be accused of being influenced by bias and frivolity, but in this case I believe a strong case may be made for certain fruits and vegetables, namely, the cauliflower and blueberry.

Cauliflower for several unbeatable and indisputable reasons, namely because it helps men reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Research published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute states that, “High intake of cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli and cauliflower, may be associated with a reduced risk of aggressive prostate cancer.” Furthermore, high intakes of this veggie are also associated with a lowered risk of lung and colorectal cancer.

But hold on kids, there’s more. Cauliflowers contain glucosinolates, which are said to prevent cancer by helping get rid of carcinogenic agents by getting rid of them before they can do any damage, and also help protect healthy cells from being infected. In fact, sulforaphane (a kind of glucosinolate) is activated whenever it’s chopped or chewed, which is fantastic because it’s an incredible detoxifier, and actually cleans out our bodies and removes harmful substances.

What else? Cauliflower is brimming with Vitamin C, which is great for our skin and the immune system. It’s also rich in potassium, fiber, and vitamin B6, which lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart disease, respectively. What’s not to like?

For women, you can’t go wrong with a blueberry. Tart, delicious, delightfully spherical, it contains a plethora of nutrients and benefits, is relatively low in calories and what’s best, may help prevent urinary tract infection (UTI). It’s a fact that almost half of all women will experience UTI at some point, so it’s great that blueberries, according to research performed by Rutgers University, have a compound similar to one found in cranberries (proanthocyanidin) which is shown to have anti-bacterial properties–especially against the bacterium associated with UTI. Furthermore (there’s always more when it comes to blueberries) it’s been shown by research in the University of Michigan’s Cardioprotection Research Laboratory that blueberries may help reduce belly fat. True, this research was done on rats (I bet they were grateful) but still, how potentially exciting is that?

Finally (I got tired of saying furthermore) blueberries are also loaded with fiber, which women need lots of (21-25gr). It guards against heart disease, weak eyesight, cancer, and aging. It will also wash your car. According to Tufts University it contains anthocyanin (that’s what gives it that wonderful blue color), an antioxidant that makes it one of the healthiest fruit choices to guard against age. So, yes, blueberries will make you immortal. Or a little bit more immortal, which is nice.

Monthly Penis Care – Getting Up Close and Personal with the Manhood in the Mirror

When it comes to a man’s twig and berries, one can never be too careful. A serious penis problem can derail an otherwise healthy sex life, cause fertility issues or even put a man’s life at risk. Even still, many men avoid going to the doctor for below the belt problems. A man may feel embarrassed to talk about his sex life with a doctor, or may simply be afraid of what the doctor will find. Luckily, there are a few ways to evaluate and maintain one’s penis health at home; however, if a problem does come up, it is time to suck it up and go to the doctor like a big boy!

Self-Examination

A medical examination of the bedroom equipment can be an embarrassing situation for even the most confident of men – and who can blame them? Nobody really wants a virtual stranger getting up close and personal with his business, but regular examinations are essential to maintaining the health of the penis. Luckily, an at-home self-examination is easy to perform and can help keep things in order between the annual trip to the doctor. Yes, both are needed! Doctors recommend monthly self-examinations for testicular cancer in addition to the screen performed in office during the yearly physical – remember prevention is key.

How to perform a self-examination

1. First of all, grab a mirror. It may not be a pretty sight, but there are some angles a man simply cannot see without a hand mirror – it’s time to get a good look.

2. Give the whole area a good looking over to notice any bumps, sores or lumps that are visible to the naked eye.

3. Next, hop in a warm bath or shower. This helps relax the scrotum skin, making it easier to feel the testicles.

4. Gently palpate the testicles, feeling for any lumps, bumps or swelling that are out of the ordinary. Both testicles should feel smooth except for one small bumpy area on the top and back of the testicle where the duct that transports sperm lies. Roll the testicle back and forth between the thumb and forefinger gently to feel the entire unit.

5. Examine the entire area carefully. In the case of pubic hair, be sure to spread hair so that skin is exposed.

6. Compare the size and shape of the testicles. It is normal for one to be a little bigger than the other and to hang lower, but the shapes should be fairly uniform.

When to see the doctor

Checking the area regularly is the best way to notice change; the more familiar one is with the terrain, the easier it is to feel something out of the ordinary. It is worth a trip to the doctor if any of the following symptoms should appear during a monthly exam:

* Discharge, blood or pus oozing from the penis
* Blood in the urine or ejaculate
* A lump or bump in one testicle
* Pain, swelling, or tenderness of the area
* Swelling or fluid built up in the scrotum
* A noticeable increase in the size of one or both testicles
* A feeling that the scrotum is heavy or dragging
* Enlargement of the pectoral tissue – or man boobs – with or without soreness

Penis care measures

In addition to performing a monthly self-examination to monitor for testicular cancer or other concerns, there are a few basic tips a man can abide by to keep his manhood healthy for the long haul.

* Wrap it up – i.e. always use a condom to prevent the transmission of diseases.

* Exercise – what is good for the heart is good for the penis. A good cardio routine can improve circulation to the penis and lead to a big payout in the bedroom.

* Keep it clean – proper hygiene is important to stave of infection, yeast and odor; be sure to get in there with a gentle soap on a daily basis.

* Extra nutrition for the penis – daily use of a penis vitamin cream (most professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil) can protect the penis from infection, improve the quality of the skin, boost circulation and reduce signs of aging. Slather on daily for a healthier penis in no time.

Vitamin D isn’t one of those. Vitamin D benefits your heart, your skin, your immune system, your mental health and can lower your risk of certain types of cancers, like breast, colorectal, prostate and ovarian. Skin cancer rates have been rising steadily in the United States and one of the most effective ways of preventing all types of skin cancer is the liberal use of sunscreen. Sunscreen can protect against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) light, both of which have the potential to cause skin cancer.

Penis Warts – An Ounce of Prevention for Better Sexual Health

Penis warts are an unattractive addition to a man’s equipment, and most men would like to avoid contracting them. Although warts are most often harmless, they don’t give the impression that one has a healthy penis and can cause many a partner to withdraw from an encounter or relationship. Practicing good penis health can help to prevent penis warts and can also aid in treating those warts when they do occur.

The backstory
Penis warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which has been much in the news in recent years. HPV is thought to significantly increase the risk of a woman developing cervical cancer; the risk of anal cancer is also significantly increased with HPV. There is also another link, though less strong, to the development of penile cancer. None of this is to say that anyone who develops penis warts will get penis cancer; however, doctors should be aware of genital warts so that they can determine whether they need to keep an eye out for any possible symptoms that might indicate penis cancer could develop.

Genital warts, like all warts, are passed on by skin-to-skin contact. Though they do not cause pain by themselves, friction caused by rubbing against clothing or skin can irritate them and cause pain.

Not just genital warts
By the way, all warts are caused by HPV, not just the ones that are classified as genital warts; however, the type of HPV that causes genital warts is different than that which causes, say, a wart on the hand or on the toe. Except in some cases in which an individual has immune system issues, one type of wart can’t be passed to another part of the body. So, for example, if a man masturbates with a wart on his palm (and his immune system functions properly), he should not be able to pass the wart on to his penis.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does list the mouth as an area of infection for genital warts, although this is less common than in the genital area and the anus.

Treatment
Often a person can get HPV without any warts appearing; in most cases, when the warts do appear, the body’s immune system eventually defeats the virus and the warts then disappear on their own.

Other times, warts linger and the person who wants them removed needs to see a doctor to decide on the proper course of action. There are topical mediations (both prescription and over-the-counter) which can be used. Other methods for removal include freezing, burning and, in extreme cases, surgery.

Prevention
There are generally three recommended steps for keeping from catching genital warts:

* Get an HPV vaccination. It is recommended that all males and females get the vaccine between the ages of 9 and 26, and preferably before they become sexually active. Studies are still being conducted to see if the vaccine is reliably effective after the age of 26.

* Use condoms. Although not 100% effective, they can provide some protection against the spread of HPV.

* Don’t smoke. Studies show that smokers are more likely to get genital warts.

The majority of men who develop penis warts will not suffer any further negative health consequences, but they can be uncomfortable during sex and cause a sore penis. To soothe a sore penis, whatever the cause, regularly use a top drawer penis health cream (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil). The optimal cream will include a combination of moisturizers, such as vitamin E and Shea butter, for soothing relief. In addition, the cream needs to include a select antioxidant, such as alpha lipoic acid, to age in preventing premature penis cell aging.

Advice To Consider After Learning You Have Cancer

Cancer is one of the most frightening and horrific experiences of modern life. Knowing how to prevent or deal with cancer can be a little less frightening if you have the information you need. Read this article for information and insight about various types of cancer.

Watching your sugar intake can help prevent cancer cell growth. Cancer cells feed on sugar, and eliminating it from the diet can sometimes starve the cancer cells. This approach is not likely to cure cancer on its own accord, but it may be combined with other treatments to improve results.

Skin cancer is quite common, which makes sun exposure one of the leading causes for cancer. Applying sunscreen is a must and using protective clothing, like a hat, is very effective for prevention.

There are many myths and half-truths that exist about cancer in today’s society. Some people may think cancer is contagious or that you may not be able to work anymore. Try not to hide anything, and be honest.

If you are active, your chance of being diagnosed with colon cancer goes down by about 40%. That occurs because regular workouts keep a person in optimum health, and lowers the risk of cancer inducing diseases, such as diabetes. Put the time and effort into developing an exercise program and sticking to it to protect yourself from cancer.

Many people think that smoking only causes emphysema and lung cancer; however, smoking also causes colon cancer. Inhaled smoke from the tobacco transfers carcinogens to the colon and the tobacco itself can increase the size of colon polyps. These are just a few more reasons that giving up smoking altogether is a good idea.

If you have to get screened for breast cancer, don’t let the fear of discomfort worry you. The discomfort is very temporary, usually lasting only a few minutes. This type of screening can be the deciding factor in starting an effective treatment in time to avoid surgery, and possibly save your life. With this in mind, avoiding the screening because of some momentary discomfort just doesn’t compute.
